Who We Are
We believe a perfectly fitted garment changes how you carry yourself. Not because of how it looks, but because of how it feels — worn in, present, yours. That belief is at the heart of everything we do at Alena Hume.
Our Craft
Alena's training began with alterations, not dressmaking. She learned to work with finished garments, fixed seams, and fabrics that couldn't be recut. Where a dressmaker starts with a pattern they can adjust, an alterationist works with what exists and finds a way. It builds a different kind of instinct — one that is precise, adaptive, and deeply respectful of the original work.
Anessa brings the formal foundation — trained through university, undergraduate and postgraduate. Together, their skills are genuinely complementary. One sees the garment as it could be. The other sees it as it is, and knows exactly what it will take to get there.
Supported by Adam, the Alena Hume team has touched well over 3000 garments. That number matters not as a statistic, but as a measure of depth — of the range of bodies, fabrics, constructions, and challenges that have come through this studio. When something new arrives, we know how to meet it.
Our Approach
Appointments at Alena Hume are unhurried and genuinely personal. We ask questions, we listen carefully, and we follow the conversation wherever it needs to go — whether that's the practicalities of a hem, or what you actually want to feel on the day.
The studio is a private space. You will not be rushed, compared, or made to feel anything other than looked after. Some appointments are straightforward. Others go deeper. We take our lead from you.
Our Reputation
Alena Hume was established in October 2022, but the experience behind it runs deeper. Alena spent 12 years building her reputation in the Manawatu bridal industry before opening this studio — and many of the clients who found her then continue to find her now.
We are intentional about our capacity. We do not take on more than we can do well. What we offer instead is care, precision, and the quiet confidence of a team that genuinely knows what it is doing.
We care deeply about the people who come through our door and the world they live in. Our values are not a list we assembled — they are simply how we operate.
We believe everyone deserves to feel their best, regardless of who they are or what their occasion is. We believe good craft is worth doing properly, and that a garment treated with skill and respect will outlast anything made in haste. We believe in being honest — about what we can achieve, about what we recommend, and about how we work.
And we believe that how we treat the environment is inseparable from how we treat each other. Fashion leaves a heavy footprint, and we have never been comfortable with that. So we recycle, we choose carefully, and we keep looking for ways to do more — not because it makes good copy, but because it would feel wrong not to.
